Traumatic Brain Injury: Definition and Symptoms
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is defined as any type of trauma to the brain caused by force. The problems associated with traumatic brain injury vary greatly and may include physical, cognitive, emotional and/or behavioral impairments.
Possible physical impairments are headache, dizziness, tinnitus, change in vision, hearing loss, decreased sense of smell, decreased sense of taste, fatigue, sexual dysfunction, seizures and sleep disorders. The sleep disorders range from cannot sleep to cannot wake up.
Cognitive symptoms may include inability to concentrate, inability to reason, mental fatigue and confusion, problems with short-term memory and inability to stay on task. The cognitive impairments make it challenging to work and perform daily tasks at an acceptable level of proficiency.
Emotional changes that may accompany traumatic brain injury are changes in personality, severe mood swings, anxiety and depression. These emotional changes are especially confusing to children.
A person with a traumatic brain injury may exhibit the following behavioral impairments: impulsive, poor judgment, lack of inhibitions, lack of self-control (may struggle with addictive behaviors), inability to develop or maintain relationships and irresponsible. The social impairments that may accompany a TBI are embarrassing and awkward for the family and difficult for others to understand. This is especially true when the TBI is less severe and the victim appears to be functioning normally in other areas.
